Subject: FN0224-Invertebrates: Prawn and Shrimp by Trap - South Coast
and Offshore
Open 12:00 May 1 until further notice for all species of shrimp,
including prawns, by trap gear, in the following areas:
- Areas 11 to 17;
- Area 18, except for Satellite Channel Ecological Reserve;
- Area 19;
- Subareas 20-1 to 20-5;
- Areas 21 to 27;
- Subarea 29-5;
- Areas 111, 121, 123, 124, 125, 126, and 127.
Subareas are described in the Pacific Fishery Management Area
Regulations.
Note:
- This notice applies to South Coast Areas 11 to 27 and Subarea 29-5
only and Offshore Areas 111, 121, and 123 to 127 inclusive. Please
refer to other notices for: the North and Central Coast Areas 1 to 10,
101 to 110, 130, and 142; and the Fraser River Area notice for Areas 28
and 29 (remainder).
- Following opening day May 1, setting and hauling of prawn and shrimp
by trap gear, line and buoys, is permitted only once per day as a
condition of licence in all areas of the coast. This is referred to as
single hauling.
- On the first day of the fishery, May 1, fishers will be permitted to
set their gear and haul and reset it once only, provided they do so by
19:00.
- In all areas, after opening day, setting and hauling of prawn and
shrimp traps will be permitted only between 07:00 (7:00 a.m.) and 19:00
(7:00 p.m.) and hauling of traps will be permitted only once per day.
- All in-season area closures will be implemented at 19:00 unless
otherwise announced.
- J.O.Thomas is the service company selected by industry to provide:
trap tags, logbooks, hail in, and the in-season charter vessel
monitoring program. The new hail in number is 1-866-930-4000.
- New logbook reporting requirements will be in effect, fishers must
record each string as it is hauled on a string by string basis.
- The minimum size limit for prawns is 33 mm measured as carapace
length. The minimum size for tailed prawns is 22 mm telson length.
- Traps must be sorted and undersized prawns released as each trap comes
on board.
- All berried prawns must be released May 1 until June 30.
- Sooke Harbour and Basin - Subareas 20-6 and 20-7 will open Nov 1.
Fishers will be limited to 50 traps as a condition of licence.
- Fishers are reminded that section 25(1) of the Fisheries Act prohibits
all pre-fishery fishing efforts or the setting of any fishing gear or
apparatus prior to the opening time at 12:00 May 1.
- All frozen and fresh product on board must be in a condition that it
can be readily measured and identified by species. This prohibits
freezing of whole or tailed product in solid blocks or tubs of ice.

- Areas 2, 3, 5 to 10, 101 to 110, 130 and 142;
- Subareas 1-1 to 1-5, 1-7, 4-1 to 4-9, and 4-12 to 4-15.
Variation Order No. 2000-161 in effect.
Note:
- This notice applies to Areas 1 to 10, 101 to 110, 130 and 142. Please
refer to other notices for southern areas.
- Following May 1, setting and hauling of prawn and shrimp by trap gear,

Subarea 1-6, Masset Inlet, and Subareas 4-10 and 4-11, Prince Rupert,
will open 12:00 May 1, to a directed fishery for humpback shrimp.
Prawns may not be retained or possessed in this fishery. Vessels must
offload all prawns prior to fishing for humpback shrimp in these areas.
