From the Prawn Listserve
Data from DFO
The following is a summary of the 2001 Prawn Buyer Market Survey.
100% of the buyers that were contacted participated in the market survey.
Their assistance in the survey is appreciated. The information that was
collected is a useful account of how prawns are being bought and sold in the
marketplace.
The numbers broke down as follows:
* 1,872,426 kilograms total
* 1,446,000 kilograms frozen at sea (77%)
* 243,915 kilograms frozen at plant (13%)
* 182,511 kilograms ungraded and tails (10%)
* Average price was $15.91/kg.
* Extra large frozen at sea garnered the highest price ($17.66/kg.)
* Tails garnered the lowest price ($12.20/kg. whole prawn price,
$24.40/kg. tailed weight)
* Frozen at sea breakdown by weight (figures rounded off):
* Medium - 25% of FAS
* Large - 42% of FAS
* Extra large - 27% of FAS
* Jumbo - 5% of FAS
* Super jumbo - 1% of FAS
These figures do not include dock sales and private sales. In the 1998
market survey it was estimated that approximately 17% of the landings were
dock sales or private sales. The fishery has changed since 1998, so this
figure probably does not hold true for the fishery in 2001. Logbook data is
not yet available for comparison.
Attached is a summary report of the data.
